Rowing With Purpose

Rowing with purpose is vital if you’re going to do more than drift with the current. It’s tempting to simply follow the current but that current might take you somewhere you don’t want, or need to be.

We recently added a new correspondent, a young freelancer, to our team. Along with the pride that she would choose to begin her career with us, is a responsibility to make sure that she, and all of our contributors, grasp what it is we’re trying to do. After all, nobody gets in a boat unless they know where it’s sailing to— or they shouldn’t anyway.

So I spent a few days, unpacking the ethos, the Tao of Garage Gym Life to her and in the process realized that this is my new mission. Since leaving the United States Marine Corps, I often struggled to find meaning in civilian life. Of course, my work was purposeful, but having a reason to do a worthwhile thing, isn’t the same thing as feeling a calling to pursue a vision. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “Everything is permissible,” but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up,” 1 Corinthians 10:23 HCSB.

I’m rowing with purpose because Garage Gym Life and everything it means for my family and the families of everyone who will row this boat with us, is my mission. Every obstacle is simply a strong current that we have to overcome if we want to reach a destination that everyone who is drifting with the current will never see.

Cast off. Time to leave the shore. We have new worlds to discover.
