Powerlifting Meet Checklist

We’ve put together a powerlifting meet checklist to help new lifters avoid some of the stumbling blocks of their first meet. Everyone is nervous at their first meet, not just because of nerves when you’re getting on the platform but also because you’re doing so many things that are foreign to you. Garage Gym Life Media in our continuing effort to help athletes who train at home succeed as they pursue their goals, has put together a checklist of things you need to know and things that you need to take with you to your first powerlifting meet. We’re all about helping athletes who train at home so you should DEFINITELY subscribe to the channel to get all of the great content!

What’s In the Powerlifting Meet Checklist Playlist?

This playlist can be found exclusively on the Garage Gym Life Media YouTube channel and the list of videos includes:

  • Powerlifting Rules Explained – a simple and easy to understand rules breakdown by a Nationally certified referee who covers all of the rules of the squat, bench press and deadlift as well as rules specific to drug tested competitions.
  • Setting Your Rack Heights for Squat – When you go weigh in, you’ll be asked to give your rack heights which requires knowing how to set your rack heights. But many federations use competition squat stands which operate quite differently from the squat racks at the local gym or the power rack that many home gym owners use at home. This can be confusing to new lifters or lifters who are accustomed to using a monolift and so we’ve created a video that not only shows you how to operate squat stands to set rack heights but also gives helpful hints for how to decide what rack height will work best for you.
  • Setting Your Rack Heights for Bench Press – the companion video to the Setting Rack Heights for Squat video, this video shows you how to operate the competition bench press to set your rack heights as well as how to set your safeties. This way you’ll be able to fill out your card at weigh ins with complete confidence letting you focus on making weight and preparing for the competition.
  • Picking Your Attempts – Deciding what to set as your opening attempts for the squat, bench press and deadlift can be confusing to first time lifters and so we had a State certified powerlifting referee and coach, give you the same tips she shares with her athletes to help them set the correct attempts for meet day! Must watch!
  • Tool to Get Your Lifting Belt Tight – The Vise is a handy tool for lifters who use single or double prong lifting belts rather than lever belts. After using the Vise a few times, lifters will be able to get their lifting belt as tight as they want without burning a ton of precious energy that could be better used on the platform!
  • Advice for Packing Your Bag – What to take to a powerlifting meet is an important topic and it can be especially tough for athletes who train at home because for most of the year, your entire home gym is your gym bag! When it comes to packing for a powerlifting meet, there’s nobody better to ask than a high level competitor so we asked Top 10 ranked powerlifter, Barbara Lee, to tell us what she packs in her gym bag for powerlifting meets.
