The Beekeeper Review

The Beekeeper is testosterone, adrenaline filled, action with a protagonist (Jason Statham, The Transporter, Crank, The Expendables, The Meg) that spits off one liners and bee puns and factoids as he takes out the bad guys and anyone else in the way of completing his mission. I think this is a fun watch for the treadmill. Let’s get into it.

What Is Plot of The Beekeeper?

In 2024, the elderly Mrs. Parker, played by the wonderful and beloved Phylicia Rashad (Claire Huxtable from the Cosby Show) becomes the victim of a computer phishing scam, and loses everything, including her life causing her tenant. Unfortunately for the bad guys, Mrs. Parker’s tenant, a low-profile beekeeper is actually a retired spec ops operative who dusts off his wet work skills to avenge her death.

This Movie Reminds Me Of

The Beekeeper is in the vein of movies like The Equalizer, Mr. Nobody, and even Bryan Mills (of Taken fame). A retired super-agent has to get back into the action and do the job that no one else can. This is a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Expect lots of action and fun characters to keep the story moving forward.

Who Else Is In It?

The supporting cast, includes Emmy Raver-Lampman (Hamilton/ Blacklight) as Agent Verona Parker and Bobby Naderi(Argo/Netflix’s Bright) as Agent Matt Wiley. Both Raver-Lampman and Naderi give off very entertaining performances, with onscreen banter that allows them to play off each other very well and keeps the movie rolling when Statham isn’t on the screen. Josh Hutcherson(Hunger Games/ 57 Seconds) brings a much better performance than he gave in 5 Nights At Freddy’s in my opinion.

The Verdict

This could’ve very well been a throwaway film for January. And maybe that was and probably is for Hollywood, But I feel like it is a great way to start off the year. It’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Lots of action and fun characters keep what little story they had moving forward. Overall it’s a fun watch. How would this stand up as entertainment for a fitness enthusiast that would like some entertainment while getting their work in?

On the Flex Scale, we’re going to give BeeKeeper a “Background film” but also perfect for watching if you’re on the treadmill.
