The Concept 2 Rower is one of the most durable and respected rowing brands in the commercial and home gym world. Known more accurately as a RowErg, the Concept 2 lasts forever but unfortunately that’s how long even short workouts seem to last because they’re, well, boring. There are game based rowers on the market but they cost A LOT more than the Concept 2 which you can find on the used marketplace for under $1000 depending on location. Enter Indoor Collective , a 100% free video game app for Concept 2 Rowers that I’ve personally been using since last Fall.
What I Like
- It’s Free – that’s pretty self explanatory. Free is my favorite price as long as the free item is still high enough quality.
- It’s Entertaining – This app not only gives me interesting scenery to look at, who doesn’t like a Canal Tour of Venice, a trip through a Haunted Forest for Halloween or a Winter Course complete with giant penguins on the shores? The scenery is well fleshed out with joggers going across bridges as you row under them and cheering spectators along the sides as you race.
- It’s Challenging – in my conversation with Indoor Collective cofounder, Catherine Hamblet, I mentioned that the Varsity Duck is my eternal nemesis, (something that I’m sure is shared by all users of this app everywhere) but it’s nice to have visual markers of how well I’m doing beyond the dry statistics on the PM5 Concept2 monitor. The three classes of ducks, Novice, Junior Varsity and Varsity combine to push you to row harder and for longer as you try to catch up and pass and avoid being passed yourself.
- It Has Options for Solo And Group Training – not only can users race to beat pre recorded data from other users but you also have the option to set up a Group Practice session with other users in different locations and time zones around the world. And all of your times can still be added to the Concept2 leaderboards.
